Every buyer has a wish list, which has changed substantially since Covid-19 hit our shores. For example pre pandemic, train stations, dining rooms and conservatories were at the top of requirements, whereas now it’s home offices, open-plan living and eco credentials that have shot to the top.

Rightmove have released a very interesting list of home features that are rising in popularity the most, which we thought made for interesting reading.

#1 Garden offices

Up 1046% since a decade ago, garden offices are becoming seriously cool places to work, offering a beautiful working environment that is fully equipped with wifi, heating, electrics and insulation. This is due to people choosing to work from home having experienced the benefits of it during the various lockdowns. They are a fantastic alternative to taking up a room in the house or trying to squeeze a desk in somewhere. They also allow you to easily separate home life from work, where you can be free from distraction.

#2 Bi-fold doors

With homeowners wanting to extend their living space into their gardens or outdoor space, bi fold doors have become very popular – up 589% since ten years ago. They are ideal for bringing food and drink in and out at a summer bbq and allow you to appreciate your garden so much more from inside due to the wall of glass. They also provide good ventilation during a heatwave when open.

#3 Orangeries

Whilst conservatories have become less popular, orangeries are on the up – by 173%. These are being used for playrooms, dining rooms, snugs, gyms, offices and entertaining spaces. They provide the perfect extension without the hassle of planning permission (as long as you fit the guidelines), there are some lovely designs available, and they can be used for multi purposes.

#4 Underfloor heating

Up 114%, we are not surprised to see underfloor heating on the list at a time when energy bills are soaring. They offer increased efficiency which means homeowners can enjoy some savings.

#5 Summer houses

Summer houses have increased in popularity by 90%, and we can see why. When forced to stay at home, many of us spent a huge amount of time in our gardens – a trend that appears to be staying. Summer houses can be used for a variety of reasons, such as reading, working, exercising and even for creating an outdoor bar! They can be used all year round (assuming you insulate and waterproof them!), and provide really beautiful living spaces outside that can quite literally be used as anything.

#6 Open-plan layouts

With flexible space highly sought after, open-plan living is having a come back. It’s all about flexibility and flow with homes in this design, giving extra room for furniture, socialising and storage, whilst allowing for a connection with your outdoor space and extending natural light. Kitchens are often made the heart of the home too in an open-plan set up, which is perfect for families looking for more than just a place to cook.
